LNG terminals in Stade and Wilhelmshaven: Start before winter secured!

In Germany, the commissioning of two new floating import terminals for liquid gas (LNG) on the Lower Saxony coast is about to be done. According to a spokesman for the German Energy Terminal (DET), these terminals in Stade and Wilhelmshaven should start before winter. However, the exact date for the start is still unclear, since remaining work is still being carried out in both locations.

The operation of these industrial plants was originally planned for the first half of 2023. Due to supplier problems and further delays, however, now has to be planned to the second half of 2024.

progress in the remaining work

The terminal in Wilhelmshaven differs greatly from the floating terminal that has already been in operation, which has been working at a fixed transition point for chemical goods since early 2023. The second, new terminal, on the other hand, is being built on an investor without a fixed land connection. "Work on the island investor is making high pressure," said the spokesman for the DET. At the moment you take care of the remaining work on the connecting pieces and on the data and power supply.

The terminal ship "Energos Force" already invested in the industrial port of Stade in mid -March. Here the constructions for loading as well as the connection and control systems up to the transfer point are currently completed to the remote control network. Before the terminal can be officially put into operation, however, theses are still required, which must also be documented.

long -term plans of the federal government

The initiative for the construction of the LNG terminals follows the Federal Government's intention to reduce the dependence on Russian gas deliveries, especially after attacking Ukraine. In Germany, several of these floating terminals are already in operation - namely in Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel and Mukran on Rügen. In the long term, these terminals should be replaced by stationary systems.

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck recently expressed that the gas supply in Germany was sufficiently secured for the coming winter. The gas stores are well filled and the new LNG terminals can serve as an additional buffer capacity.
