In the spell of the mind - an exciting chapter of the history of psychiatric history will blossom in the tranquil city of Vechta on October 24 and 25, 2024! The Lower Saxony State Archives Department Oldenburg becomes the setting for a gripping workshop that deals with the dark and fascinating aspects of psychiatric healing art in the northwest. Not only the past is illuminated here, but also outlined the perspectives for the future of research.
This event, part of the research project "Between care and coercion", offers a deep insight into the development of psychiatric treatment methods - from the beginning in the 19th century to modern psychiatry. Experienced scientists and historians will talk about private and state medicinal and nursing institutions in Lower Saxony and Bremen. In addition, cultural -historical case studies are on the program that examine how to deal with mental illness from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period.
