Wittenberge train station: Refurbishment brings historical shine back!

Wittenberge, Deutschland - in Wittenberge, a place full of history, an architectural jewel is brought back to life! The listed reception building of the train station, also known as the "Castle of the City", soon shines in new splendor. After years of expiry and vacancy, 20 craft companies took on the challenge of renovating the buildings built in 1846. The reason? The State Garden Show 2027 is just around the corner, and Wittenberge wants to show its best side!

The renovation, which has been in full swing since June last year, has already revealed many walls that were once hidden. Project manager Martin Röhr explains: "We have brought out the old structure in this house again, let the house live again, let them breathe." Historical elements such as skylight and old stairwells should be preserved while the building is modernized at the same time. The plans are ambitious: job center, a small town academy and a coworking space should move in here and transform the station building into a lively center.

financing and challenges

The cost of the renovation amounts to around 18 million euros, with 13 million euros from funding. But the city faces a new challenge: an additional 3.8 million euros are required due to inflation and increased construction costs. Who will bear the additional costs remains unclear, but talks with the funding providers are already underway.

The modernization of the station is not only an architectural project, but also a strategic step to strengthen mobility in the region. Around 3,700 passengers use the train station every day, which represents an important connection between Berlin, Hamburg and other cities. If everything goes according to plan, the construction work should be completed by the end of 2025. Wittenberge is on the way to becoming an attractive goal to the ElbeTalaue!
