Hildesheim in change: from the slaughterhouse to Café Panorama!
Schuhstraße 1, 31134 Hildesheim, Deutschland - Hildesheim - A building with a fascinating story is in the center of Hildesheim: The high -rise on the corner of Schuhstraße/Altpetetristraße, which was built in 1958/59 according to the plans of the architect Dirk Gascard. Here, where the city walls once stood, the remains of the city's first stone wall were discovered during the construction work. But that's just the beginning of the exciting story! In the centuries before, there was a slaughterhouse at this location, which was demolished in 1885. A department store took its place, but a devastating fire soon left it in rubble and ash.
The dramatic turn came on March 3, 1945, when three air mines were devastated and only one basement and a stairwell left of Blankenburg. The reconstruction dragged on for years until a nine -story high -rise was built, which came up with the famous Café Panorama at a lofty height. Here, guests were able to enjoy the breathtaking view of the Andreaskirchturm over coffee and cake. The first tenant, Werner Hellwig, decided against the traditional name "Café Blankenburg" and instead chose the memorable name that reflects the spectacular view.
a look into the past
The Café Panorama quickly became the highlight of the city - not only because of its view, but also through its central location, which offered space for a food dealer, a bank branch and a pharmacy. In the 1960s, the high-rise was a real eye-catcher, and the lettering "Café Panorama" proudly emblazoned on the glass attic. But the times changed: in 2003 the lettering was dismantled and the café had to close its doors forever. A tragic end for a place that gave generations of Hildesheimers unforgettable moments.
