Holzminden helps: Collect donations for needy Lebanese!
In Holzminden one of the very big hearts shows: The Hussein family has started a donation initiative to support people in Lebanon who urgently need help. The Lebanese national flag hangs on a garage at Allheimer Straße 37. Right next to it, a large poster wraps the words "donation acceptance for the Lebanon". Here you collect everything that could be useful for those affected.
Bassam Hussein, the head of the family, reports on the extensive donations that have already been sent on the way. "We recently sent a fully packed van to Hanover," he says. Charges are currently stacked in their garage again. The required goods range from medication to pillows, blankets and hygiene articles. Support comes not only from the Lebanese community, but also from Turkish -born fellow citizens. Ümit Bayer, the chairman of the Ditib Holzminden, also made a decisive contribution.
The need of people in Lebanon is enormous. The ongoing conflicts fled hundreds of thousands from the south of the country. Christof Johnen, Head of International Cooperation at the German Red Cross (DRK), warns: "The humanitarian situation is increasingly worsening." Touching in particular are the reports of those who have to live on the streets or in overcrowded refugee camps and cannot find a safe refuge. Bassam Hussein shares the concerns of his relatives on site: “Most currently live on beaches and try to build improvised accommodations.
In addition to the numerous relief goods collected by the Hussein family, the DRK also flies further programs into the Lebanon. Bassam reports that the Lebanese airline Middle East Airlines carries out empty flights from Germany to Beirut, which you use to transport the necessary things. "We will collect until we learn that nothing is needed," he explains. His personal story, shaped by flight and need during the Lebanese civil war in 1986, drives him to work for the current refugees.
