Colonial shadow: Exhibition and lectures in Göttingen from October
As part of the upcoming exhibition "Göttingen Kolonial. 1870 - 1945", an extensive accompanying program will be offered on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 6 p.m. with an exciting lecture. Dr. Felix Schürmann will speak on the topic of "Local approaches to colonial history. Potentials and problems using the example of Frankfurt am Main". This lecture aims to shed light on the less known facets of colonial history, especially like cities like Frankfurt, which were not the focus of the colonial events, but have connections on this topic.
Participation in the lectures is free of charge and registration in advance is not necessary, which makes the event particularly accessible. According to Dr. Schürmann will be Prof. Dr. Lixin Sun gives a lecture on the Chinese society in Qingdao during German colonial rule, whereby the focus will be on the social tensions between the German colonialists and the local Chinese social groups.

Furthermore, several lectures and a workshop are planned. So Dr. Fabian Fechner on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, speak about the processing of colonial topics in a nationwide comparison. On January 14, 2025, a workshop discussion on the role of ethnology in relation to colonial interdependencies will follow, in which experts from various disciplines discuss the challenges of provenance research.
A workshop that will take place on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, is devoted to the influence of colonialism in the region, especially with regard to local museums in Göttingen and the surrounding area. It is examined how colonial structures have shaped people's lives in smaller cities. Charlotte Prauß takes over the moderation.
For participation in this workshop, however, a prior registration is required by December 1, 2024 at the latest. All events take place in the Göttingen municipal museum, knight plan 7/8.
