Fight for unlimited positions: Göttingen scientists set ultimatum!
Fight for unlimited positions: Göttingen scientists set ultimatum!
Göttingen, Deutschland - The situation for research assistants at the University of Göttingen is becoming increasingly precarious. Numerous employees are temporarily employed, which not only puts their professional perspectives, but also the quality of the training of students. Over 85 percent of scientific employees at the largest university of Lower Saxony have no permanent contracts. These facts were recently summarized in an emotional farewell letter to an employee who has served her services for over 16 years while taking care of her family at the same time. A leaflet of the "Uni Göttingen" initiative indefinitely drew attention to these grievances, reports Verdi.de .
The employees call for an end to the time limit and the creation of permanent bodies, especially in view of the inadequate qualification options in many temporary contracts. A concrete ultimatum was set by February 7, 2025: If the university does not take any measures to address these problems, the scientists will hire the support of theses. This clear message not only aims at changes in the employment relationships, but also on an improvement in study conditions, as an anonymous employee emphasizes. The student body shows solidarity and plans to put the topic on the agenda of a general assembly in January.
science history digitized
However, there are also positive developments in the field of education. As part of a project on digitization of historical scientific texts, over 500 sources of the 18th and early 19th centuries were successfully digitized. These valuable works, which include the remarkable "Dictionnaire de Chimie" and a comprehensive history of the arts and sciences, are now accessible on the Internet. This initiative is promoted by the DFG and shows how the history of science at the University of Göttingen is actively preserved and distributed, as the academic landscape enriches, as reported on gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.deDetails | |
