Göttingen is investing in green warmth: IGS Geismar now on the net!
A significant development for schools in Geismar, Lower Saxony! The Stadtwerke Göttingen, consisting of the Georg Christoph-Lichtenberg Comprehensive School, the Martin Luther King School and the Adolf Reichwein School, connected to the environmentally friendly district heating network. While the latter two schools have been benefiting from the new heat supply since August 2024, IGS is commissioned in January 2025. This was announced as part of a solemn event, in which the city building councilor Frithjof Look and the board of the municipal utility, Dr. Gerd Rappenecker, were present. This switch to district heating is not only economically advantageous, but also brings with it considerable ecological advantages.
efficiency and climate protection connected!
The new heat supply promises more efficient heat generation, since separate boilers are no longer necessary in schools. This reduces the space requirement and increases operational safety, which leads to significantly lower operating costs. An outstanding aspect is the saving of around 34 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, which is achieved solely by the changeover of natural gas to district heating. This initiative has seen around 225 tons of CO2 equivalents through this year, which benefits the climate protection enormously-a fact that was emphasized by Frithjof Look that emphasized the need for a sustainable energy future.
The Stadtwerke Göttingen also rely on an energy supply mainly from renewable resources, such as industrial waste heat and biogas from regional sources. This sustainable practice could serve as a model for future projects. At the nationwide level, companies, such as Stadtwerke München (SWM), intend to expand their district heating networks in various areas and also examine new locations in order to establish a network -bound heat supply. According to a detailed map of the SWM, numerous areas are already shown in which such a heat supply is planned, which is very illustrated by the relevance and urgency of sustainable heat sources.
The changeover to district heating is an important step towards environmentally friendly and efficient energy use at schools in Geismar and could be inspiring for other regions, as Stadtwerke Munich show in its plans for heat supply.
