New book illuminates the history of the St. Nicolai Church in Gifhorn

Gifhorn, Deutschland - A new book has been published in Gifhorn, which deals with the origin and development of the St. Nicolai Church and its community in detail. The work was written by Uwe Gierz, a volunteer archivist of St. Nicolai and a member of the church council. The research for the book took more than seven years and included extensive source research and archive work.

The book entitled "St. Nicolai in Gifhorn - History of the Church and its community" illuminates historical documents such as church records, building documents and correspondence. It deals with the historical development of the church, which has its origin under Charlemagne when the area of the pagan Saxons was conquered. The first documentary mention of the city of Gifhorn and church history mentions 825 years ago.

historical backgrounds and church buildings

In the history of St. Nicolai, three church buildings can be detected. The first building was destroyed in 1519 during the Hildesheimer Abbey Fehde. The second was a converted stable building that had to be demolished after 180 years due to dilapidation. The third and current building is a baroque church, the construction period of which took twelve years, which the parish brought to the brink of financial bankruptcy.

The St. Nicolai Church is considered the symbol of the city, shapes the market square and is also visible on Braunschweiger Strasse. Until the Weimar Reich constitution, the citizens and the parish formed a unit. The book also deals with chapters on the Christian Vater Orgel as well as important graves under the church floor. In addition, information about the parish of the parish, including the new parish hall, is included. Biographies of pastors and superintendents are also mentioned.

The book has been published in the Südheide-Verlag Calluna, wears the ISBN 978-3-94494623-8 and is available at a price of 12 euros. Interested parties can obtain it in the parish office, in bookstores or directly from the publisher at www.calluna-buch.de . The printing costs were covered by the St. Nicolai Foundation.
