Severe weather in Lower Saxony: Permanent rain and gusts of wind threaten!

In Lower Saxony, the population is facing restless weather. After a stormy night, weather experts from the German Weather Service (DWD) announce that the region will be affected by strong wind and constant rain by Tuesday. Experts warn that several areas have to expect floods.

On Tuesday, October 1st, meteorologists expect persistent rain between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., which could lead to flooding on streets and underpasses in some regions. The district of Diepholz, the district of Verden, the city of Oldenburg, the district of Nienburg and the Hanseatic city of Bremen are particularly affected. Up to 40 liters of rain per square meter can fall in the next 14 hours.

wind gusts and thunderstorms in Lower Saxony

Already on Monday, September 30th, the DWD issued initial warnings. The reason for the violent weather fluctuations is a changeable air mass that pulls from the east over Lower Saxony. While there are gusts of wind on the islands and on the coast of up to 60 km/h, even storm gusts of up to 80 km/h are forecast in the inland.

The experts explain that the wind originally blows from southeast, with a cool air mass flows between one high above Poland and a deep above the North Sea. These weather conditions ensure unstable and turbulent weather, which is particularly noticeable on the coast.

In addition, storm activity is expected from Monday to Tuesday. For some regions in Lower Saxony, wind gusts can be expected at speeds of up to 60 km/h, which could further heat the already precarious weather conditions. The temperature is expected to be between 14 and 16 degrees.

affected regions and safety instructions

Current official warnings apply until Monday, September 30th, at 7 p.m. for the following regions: District Diepholz, Verden district, Rotenburg district (Wümme), district of Nienburg (Weser) and for the city of Oldenburg and the Hanseatic City of Bremen. In these areas, the population is recommended to prepare for possible storms and the resulting dangers.

In the second half of the night, thunderstorms with stormy wind gusts are again likely. On Tuesday itself, the weather remains inconsistent, with strong clouds and local rainfall that can end in thunderstorms. The temperatures will usually be around 15 degrees in the afternoon.

The forecasts indicate that the weather could get a little milder on Wednesday, with clouds that are gradually loosening up. Nevertheless, the weather conditions remain tense and those responsible rates for caution, especially in the heavily affected areas.
