Insect park Bramstedt: winter rest for the local crawls!
In the Bramstedt insect park there is currently a surprising silence! Where a busy sum and humming could be heard a few weeks ago, the insects are now in hibernation. But the natural garden and insect representative Jens Diedrich Weiß: There is a fascinating secret behind the dreary backdrop. The park, which was launched in 2019, offers numerous insects a protected retreat for the cold season.
At first glance, the park seems lifeless, but Diedrich shows that there is more here than you think. A sandarium, a small sand hill, is at home of many insects. "You can see the corridors," he explains, pointing to the small holes in the sand. These are a sign that the residents are safe and safe. The park fulfills its purpose, even if the optics suffer in late autumn and winter. "This is intended," says Diedrich and emphasizes that nature has to find its own way to develop.
a habitat for endangered species
The insect park is not only a retreat, but also a habitat for endangered species. Shrubs such as grain cherry and hawthorn grow here, which bloom at different times a year and serve as a source of food for the insects. The focus is particularly on wild bees because they regularly need “petrol stations” to recharge your batteries. Diedrich explains that the small holes in the sandarium and the insect hotel, which is also well received, offer important nesting places for these species.
The insects will remain in their safe hiding until spring. Then the park is cut back to 15 centimeters once a year to maintain the area. Diedrich encourages garden owners to also make space for such retreats in their gardens. "You can just leave the last 100 square meters like that," he says. Despite the challenges that the season brings with it, he remains optimistic: "Here, many animals that we do not see will not see that feel good."
