Delmenhorst celebrates: Euphoric people dance to Assad's fall!
On Sunday morning, the cheers in Delmenhorst was loud and unmistakable. Syrian-born citizens celebrated the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the long-time ruler of Syria. The streets were filled with autocorsos, loud music and fireworks. "Free Syria, Free Syria" echoed through the air, while the celebrants gathered on Syker Straße, the Hasporter Damm and Oldenburger Straße. One participant expressed his joy with the words: "We are so happy, it's over!" In the meantime, the police informed about various messages to be honking drivers and fireworks, but noticed any violations, reported police spokesman Albert Seegers. The Islamist group Hajat Tahrir al-Scham (HTS) reported the intake of the Syrian capital Damascus and the escape of Assad, which was confirmed by various news agencies. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Assad has left the country and is now in Russia, as several media also reported.
liberation and new hope
At the celebrations in Delmenhorst, the relief about the change of government was reflected in both Syria and the hearts of the demonstrators. In a television speech, the Syrian opposition announced the "fall of the tyrant". The German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also described this development as a "first great breath", but warned of the risk of further escalation in the region. It is still important to demand the release of the imprisoned oppositional and to protect the "property of the Free Syrian State".
In the middle of the jubilation about the alleged liberation of the country, there are also serious concerns. After more than a decade of civil war and the partial control of the Assad regime, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop. The civil war devastated Syria and practically shared the country. Despite the euphoria in Delmenhorst and the reports on the control of capitals through the opposition, hope for a peaceful and stable transition phase remains a challenge. Detailed reports about the developments in Syria are essential to avoid future tensions, as the two news portals Weser Kurier and TRT report.
