Celle terminates energy concession: What does that mean for the citizens?
Celle. A dramatic step for the city of Celle! The Council has decided to terminate the concession contract with Celle-Uelzen Netz GmbH (CUN) early on December 31, 2026. This means that both the CUN and the Stadtwerke Celle want to join the upcoming tendering process. But a joint application that some council members favored seems unlikely.
The reactions are split! SVO spokesman Thomas Hans warns of the consequences: "The city of Celle already benefits from the winners of the SVO group. A separation could be disadvantageous for everyone involved, especially for customers." Thomas Edathy, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Celle, sees it differently and believes that the network charges for Celler could drop consumers. "With this decision, the city of Celle exchanges long -term security against a high risk," emphasizes Hans.

The two energy suppliers are determined to apply for the power grid, while the Situation around the gas network remains uncertain. The federal government plans to abolish fossil fuels by 2045, which significantly reduces the attractiveness of the gas networks. If no bidder is found, the gas network could fall back to the city, which the municipal utilities could take over.
Another exciting point: If the municipal utility company is awarded the contract for the power grid, you must buy it from the CUN. Edathy estimates the purchase price at 50 to 70 million euros, financed by selling her shares in SVO holding. "We would take over all CUN employees who want to switch to us and who we need," assures Edathy. The SVO group, on the other hand, regrets the political decision and sees the city of Celle in a risky game.
