New chapter in St. Walburg: Sr. Elisabeth will be the new abbess!
Eichstätt, Deutschland - The Benedictine Abbey of St. Walburg in Eichstätt completed an exciting change of leadership on Monday, October 28th: Sister Elisabeth Hartwig OSB (58) was elected as the new abbess! She follows Hildegard Dubnick, who stepped down on March 24th. Elisabeth has been an interim at the head of the abbey since April and is happy about the new path that she will take with her fellow sisters.
"I would like to serve the fellow sisters and the St. Walburg Abbey with all my skills and opportunities," said the new abbess of her choice. Her commitment to the community is no longer possible - she has been rooted in Eichstätt for 34 years and worked as a religious teacher for over 20 years at the St. Walburg primary school. For them, people there are very close and their professional work is closely connected to their spiritual journey.

Born in Torgau on the Elbe, Elisabeth Hartwig grew up in the atheistic GDR and studied physics at the University of Jena. Originally, she did not want to become a physicist, but also wanted to be directed by a deep philosophical-theological interest. Your search for God and the fascination for creation decisively shaped her life path. In 1990 she came to Eichstätt, where she felt a life -changing certainty when visiting St. Walburg monastery: "I am exactly where my path will go on". Her family surprised her decision to enter the monastery, but they soon realized that it was a special reputation. In addition to her monastic activity, mother Elisabeth is active as a spiritual companion, with "listen" as a leitmotif - a powerful motto that reflects her calling and dedication to God's Word.The St. Walburg Abbey, which was founded in 1035, is one of the oldest and most important monasteries of Bavaria. In the heart of the abbey, the bones of the diocesan saints of Walburga rest, which is an important pilgrimage site for many believers. The monastery community currently consists of 21 sisters who live according to the rule of St. Benedict.
