Munich celebrates 50 years of Ikea: The revolution in furniture trade!
The Bavarian capital of Munich is not only known for its impressive historical monuments and the Oktoberfest, but also for its role as an international center for large brands and companies. The first German branch of the well -known furniture store chain Ikea, which set a new trend in furniture trade, started here exactly 50 years ago. The event was not only formative for the furniture market, but for the entire retail landscape.
The Swedish furniture giant opened its gates on October 17, 1974 in Eching, not far from Munich. Ikea revolutionized the German market with an innovative concept that allowed customers to take their furniture themselves and to assemble themselves. At that time, the furniture store had to struggle with falling sales, which made Ikea's arrival a directional moment. The saying "Whoever is young has more taste than money" attracted numerous customers at the time, and about 30,000 people visited the new branch within the first three days.
ikea: A milestone in the furniture trade
The conquest of Ikea in Germany should not be underestimated. The expansion of the range and the concept of self -building inspired the buyers, so that the first Ikea in Eching must be seen as a pioneer of a serious competition in German furniture trade. The company's success set a trend in the industry that continues to this day. Ikea is currently operating 54 locations in Germany, and the brand has become an integral part of most households. The anniversary was celebrated with prominent guests, including Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder, who paid tribute to the historical event.
But Ikea was not the only company that started in Munich. Just a few years earlier, on December 4, 1971, the first McDonald’s branch in the city opened its business. At that time, the fast food giant with just six products was on the menu, the simple choice between Hamburg, cheeseburger and fries was a novelty for the German flavors. "In the 1970s, there was a great interest in international cuisine," said Margareta Büning-Fesel, head of the Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfe), which great openness explained to Fast food. Nowadays McDonald’s has over 1500 branches in Germany and the catering concept has diversified.
MediaMarkt: The start in Munich
The third large branchist, who found his way to Germany via Munich, was MediaMarkt. On November 24, 1979, he opened the first branch in the euro industry park in Freimann. Here, too, the concept was groundbreaking: an electronics retailer who was able to offer a huge range was clearly against the small specialty shops. MediaMarkt was not only known for its long-term prices, but also offered advice and repair services that made many customers. MediaMarkt now has around 270 markets in Germany, and the original branch in the euro industry park is still a popular starting point for technology enthusiasts.
All three brands - Ikea, McDonald’s and MediaMarkt - are indispensable from Munich retail and have firmly anchored in consumers' awareness. Their origins in the Bavarian state capital illustrate how important Munich was as a location for international companies and is still. The developments of the past five decades show that the Munich area was and is a fertile soil for new ideas and corporate concepts.
