Wismar student clean stumbling blocks: commemorating Nazi victims!
In a moving campaign, about 15 students from the Wismar Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium cleaned the stumbling blocks in the Hanseatic city on November 9, 2024. These small brass plates, which are reminiscent of the Jewish victims of National Socialism, were cleaned in ten different locations. The students not only devoted themselves to the Jewish victims, but also the homosexual victims of the regime. Supported by around ten other interested parties, the students gave lectures on the victims' biographies, supplemented by the historian Falk Bersch.
memory of the Reichspogromnacht
The cleaning campaign took place on the occasion of the memory of the Reichspogromnacht, which took place 86 years ago. This night marks the beginning of systematic violence against Jews, which ultimately led to the murder of six million people in the extermination camps. At the same time as a cleaning campaign, a demonstration took place in the old town of Wismar to commemorate the atrocities and to honor the victims.
In total, there are 45 stumbling blocks in Wismar, which are reminiscent of the last known addresses of the Nazi victims. This initiative is part of a greater commitment that takes place in 37 locations, where volunteers clean the brass plates and thus keep the memory of the victims of National Socialism alive.
