Schwerin increases street cleaning fees by 30 percent - what now?
In a heated meeting, the city representatives of Schwerin decided on Monday to increase the road cleaning fees. With 17 votes for this and 15, on the other hand, the costs increase by a whopping 30 percent! From the coming year, citizens will now have to pay 53 euros annually for cleaning a meter road in the highest category instead of the previous 47 euros. This is the first increase in fees in about ten years. An application from the AfD to first search for savings options was not supported.
A pedestrian zone in Puschkinstrasse could soon become a reality! (Topic)
But that's not all! From January 1, 2025, the pedestrian zone near the cathedral will be enlarged. The city representatives have decided to transform around 300 meters of Puschkinstraße between the Old City Market and Friedrichstrasse into a traffic -calmed zone. First of all, cars are only allowed to drive there at walking pace. Depending on the experience, a complete pedestrian zone could even be set up in a second phase. Restaurants in this area have already applied for external catering, and a count showed that only a few cars are on the road there. However, there are also critical voices: traffic calming will cost parking spaces, which some city representatives get. Currently, fewer parking spaces are available in the old town by two large construction sites, at the Alte Post and the former state bank.
Developments in Schwerin show how the city moves towards a new traffic and cleaning policy that brings both challenges and opportunities.
