Knife attack at the Kröpeliner Tor: Police hold the first suspect!
in the Rostock city center, more precisely at the Kröpeliner Tor, an incident has recently occurred that once again sparked the discussion about security in the city center. A 25-year-old Afghan was arrested as a suspect after injuring a 16-year-old Syrian with a complicity with a conflict with a knife. The incident occurred on Saturday, October 5, around 5:20 p.m.
The youngster suffered superficial cuts and had to be treated in a hospital. Despite the arrest of the 25-year-old, the second suspect remains on the run. Police spokesman announced that no further details on the search can be published for investigative reasons. At the scene of the crime, several young migrants had previously taken part in a physical argument.
Backgrounds to violent crime
This incident is not the first of its kind in the vicinity of the Kröpelin gate. The past few months have been shaped by violent clashes in which young people with a migration background were mainly involved. In this context, Chris Günther, the chairwoman of the Rostock CDU, speaks of a worrying problem of violent crime in the city center.
In response to the incidents, it has called for increased video surveillance, especially for Doberaner Platz and the ramparts. Despite her arguments, however, the proposal did not find the consent of the citizens, which recently rejected the application. Günther emphasizes that the acts of violence must not become normal and is disappointed with the attitude of the city administration, which has not rejected monitoring as legally not justified.
"We will not accept that shootings, knife stabbing, theft and sexual offenses, mostly committed by young men with a migration background, become normal in Rostock," according to Günther's clear message. It emphasizes the need for increased police presence and more staff in the ordinance and security service in order to restore the feeling of security in the city.
Safety situation from Police Sight
In contrast to the concerned citizens, Rochstock's police chief Achim Segebarth emphasizes that the city is safe overall. At a citizens' meeting in September, he confirmed that Rostock could not be viewed as a main crime and the majority of the citizens are skeptical about the expansion of video surveillance. It is a clear gap between the views of the security authorities and the citizens who long for more protection.
In this tense situation, it remains to be seen how the further investigation progresses and whether the demands of the citizens will be heard for more security. The developments related to the incident at the Kröpeliner Tor could possibly put pressure on the political level, since the company takes security concerns seriously and demands solutions.
