Artificial intelligence in focus: Rostock Professor inspires at the citizens' festival!

As part of the Citizens' Festival on the Day of German Unity 2024, Professor Olaf Wolkenhauer, owner of the Chair of System Biology and Bioinformatics at the University of Rostock, will give an introduction to the world of artificial intelligence (AI). This event will take place on October 3rd in Schwerin and is intended to emphasize the importance of science and interdisciplinary cooperation.

Olaf Wolkenhauer is an outstanding scientist who not only brings in his expertise in the analysis of complex systems, but also demonstrates its internationality worldwide through countless projects and cooperation. The professor, who is noticeable with a height of 2.11 meters, has a special connection to his homeland in northern Germany, which is also reflected in his commitment to promote science and education in the region.

"home of world"

The slogan "Heimat of Welt", originally shaped by the Rostock region, is a leitmotif for Wolkenhauer's way of life and working. "This combines the feeling of home with openness to international influences," explains the 58-year-old, who sees his roots in northern Germany firmly. His studies and several years of work abroad have shaped him, but Rostock is the place for him where he really feels at home.

In his research, Wolkenhauer primarily deals with mathematical models that help identify patterns in complex data. This proves, for example, to be useful in medical diagnostics, where various factors such as body size and blood values can be drawn about the state of health. In view of the rapid progress in the AI, Wolkenhauer sees enormous potential that can be proven not only in theory, but also in practice.

As a mentor, he sees it as his task to encourage young people to deal with these technologies. "Mathematics is the language of thinking!" He says, emphasizing that every student can keep up with AI, no matter where he gets the right training. He not only wants to spread this message during his lectures, but also through personal exchange with students in the region.

A look into the future of the Ki

Wolkenhauer is convinced that the next generation of students and students in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has the tools in hand to exist in the world of data and information. "A laptop and an internet connection are sufficient to set the course for the future," he explains optimistically. But he also warns that international cooperation is crucial to advance developments in the AI.

"We have to promote young talents and give them the opportunity to work in an international environment. Everyone can be a problem solver," says Wolkenhauer. Through his role as a scientist and trainer, he would like to awaken the curiosity and enthusiasm of young people for natural sciences and technology and prepare them for the challenges of the future.

The Citizens' Festival for the Day of German Unity will take place in Schwerin from October 2 to 4, 2024, and the University of Rostock will be represented together with other universities on the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania country mile at the Pfaffenteich. Wolkenhauer and his team have prepared a diverse program to celebrate and promote not only science, but also regional identity. This interaction between home and internationality should be particularly in focus.
