Sexual abuse: alarming numbers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania!

Shocking revelations from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania! A 56-year-old was convicted of shocking six and a half years in prison at the Neubrandenburg district court because he sexually abused two boys who helped him on his farm over a long period of time. This judgment is not yet final, but there is a bright light on a dark phenomenon: The number of sexual assault on children and adolescents in Germany is increasing!

The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reports for 16,375 sexual abuse of children in 2023-an increase of 5.5 percent compared to the previous year and even 20 percent in the five-year comparison! Particularly worrying: 1,200 cases were registered for young people between the ages of 14 and 17, which corresponds to an increase of 5.7 percent. Corona pandemic has also tightened the situation, because in many cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the number of abuse increased dramatically.

The perpetrators are often no strangers! According to Michael Schuldt from the State Criminal Police Office, it is often family members or close acquaintances of the victims who pass on the children in need of protection. In Rostock, for example, in 2023 by 49 abuse cases 13 were classified in the area of "marriage/partnership/family, including relatives". The police warn: Pedophils use a variety of ways to contact their victims - from family meetings to anonymous chats in the darknet.

The investigation is often extremely difficult. It is often hesitated for too long before the police are informed. It is often indications from the circle of friends and family that investigators on the trail of the perpetrators. The police do everything possible to secure evidence and to hold the perpetrators into account, but the number of unreported cases remains high.

The terrifying numbers speak for themselves: 54 children and adolescents are victims of sexual abuse every day. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser urgently demands measures to identify and condemn the perpetrators. Time urges, because the victims often suffer from the consequences of these cruel deeds for a lifetime. Society has to get up and act to protect our children!
