Neubrandenburg: Return of the rainbow flag ensures turmoil!

Stand: 04.11.2024 6:55 pm

in Neubrandenburg it is bubbling! The city council is planning a dramatic turn in the dispute over the rainbow flag. The presidium will be advised on the next steps on Monday, while thousands of citizens support a petition to return the flag. A cross -faction application that is to be brought in November 13th aims at emphasizing tolerance and openness to the world in the city.

The deputy city president Roman Oppermann (SPD/Greens) emphasizes that the current situation is not durable. The new application, initiated by the SPD and supported by a counting community of the SPD, the Greens and Leftists, as well as parts of the CDU, should take the topic of diversity wider. Already over 20 of the 42 city representatives have given their signature for this application, which underlines urgency and support in the city.

New application should set signs of diversity and openness to the world

Instead of taking back the controversial Großmüller decision, the application will set a strong sign for cohesion. Oppermann explains that the rainbow flag is not only in focus, but that it is about a clear commitment to the openness of the world and tolerance in the everyday life of the city. The second deputy city president Jens Kreutzer (BSW) announced that the city administration should be commissioned to develop concepts to make diversity and tolerance visible.

Discussions about the ban on rainbow flags

About a month ago the city council decided that the rainbow flag at the train station could no longer be hoisted. This prohibition, initiated by city representative Tim Großmüller (stable citizens of Neubrandenburg), was justified with thefts and the exchange of the flag with right symbols. The decision triggered massive protests and led to the resignation of the mayor Silvio Witt (non -party). In the meantime, an online petition to return the rainbow flag has collected over 41,000 signatures.
