A storm of indignation pulls through Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania! The debate about gender with asterisks and other gender -friendly language signs ensures heated discussions in cities such as Neubrandenburg, Rostock and Greifswald. On Wednesday, the city council in Neubrandenburg will decide on a possible ban on the gender language. The group -free councilor Tim Großmüller, known for his controversial views, describes the gender as the "deface" of the German language and calls for a ban.

The opinions of the citizens are split! Doris Voelzke from Trollenhagen is outraged: "As a woman, I feel constantly discriminated by this so -called gender. I am a woman and not!" The discussion about the use of gender stars and Co. is not only a hot topic in Neubrandenburg. In Rostock, too, there are efforts to abolish a guide for gender -friendly language half a year ago. The AfD and CDU argue that the special characters make readability and intelligibility difficult.

A step backwards in Greifswald and Stralsund

In Greifswald, it was recently decided that the administration should do without gender language. The return to the generic masculine is offset by an alternative proposal that demands the consistent approach of "applicants" and "pupils". In Stralsund, the city representatives voted against gender signs in March 2023 and thus committed a taboo break by supporting an application from the AfD.

The discussion about gender-friendly language runs all over Germany. Polls show that a majority of Germans reject the use of special characters. In April, a gender ban for schools and authorities came into force in Bavaria, while similar bans were announced in other federal states. A referendum failed in Hamburg against gender language, but corresponding initiatives were started in MV and Brandenburg. However, the state government is not planning a ban, but only gives recommendations for gender -friendly language.
