Wolves in MV: New pack and growing conflicts - what now?

The wolf population in the southern Lake District of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is booming! Two new wolf packs appeared in 2024, as the latest data from wolf monitoring show. The map, which presents the stand from October, reveals that the pack "Wokuhl" has disappeared southeast of Neustrelitz, while the new pack "Usadel" between Neustrelitz and Neubrandenburg is now enriching the region. There is also fresh news in the Müritz region: the pack "Satow" east of Lake Plauer was newly recorded. The wolf population is growing and could soon have more surprises!

Illegal shots and growing conflicts

But not everything is rosy! Environmental and Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) warns of illegal kins of wolves in the Feldberg lake landscape. Notes indicate that hunters want to regulate the wolf stocks himself. Backhaus calls for an inventory settlement and downgrading the protection status for wolves to defuse the conflicts. The growing population brings challenges that cannot be ignored!

The calls after a stronger control are getting louder. In the municipality of Feldberger Lake Landscape, an application for the removal of a wolf was made several times, but without success. Mayor Constance von Buchwaldt (SPD) recently contacted the Federal Environment Ministry and referred to the numerous incidents. Thomas Diener (CDU), member of the state parliament, also warns of an "worse improvement" and calls for effective measures to stabilize wolf population.

There are currently 19 wolf packs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and four, which temporarily commut to the country. Eight to nine of these packs have settled in the south of the lake plate. In addition, ten wolf pairs in the state have been proven. The situation remains tense and the debate about dealing with the wolves will be more intense!
