Dargun in the wastewater chaos: rats and backlog after construction breakdowns!

An incident in the small town of Dargun is currently causing excitement: a civil engineering company is sued by the city before the Neubrandenburg district court. It is about a total of 25,000 euros, while the responsible insurance of the company is only willing to pay 11,000 euros. Mayor Sirko Wellnitz said: "We cannot accept that," he reported to the Nordkurier.

The background of this legal dispute is a serious mistake that occurred in September 2022. As part of an order to establish an underground channel in a district of Dargun, a catastrophic breakdown occurred. With the hole for a cable protective tube of 16 centimeters in diameter, a higher and important stoneware pipe system for waste water, with a diameter of 20 centimeters, was destroyed.

Unsescental consequences for the residents

This breakdown had serious effects on the wastewater disposal of those affected. Around 500 citizens were temporarily affected by an unfavorable toilet situation, as Mayor Wellnitz explained. "There was nothing worse than seeing how our citizens are in an emergency without working sewage disposal." The urban wastewater disposal was forced to locate the leak and to set up an emergency drainage for several days so that citizens could get rid of their wastewater. "The discovery of the leak was initially a serious problem," recalls the head of the wastewater company.

In view of the enormous costs caused by civil engineering, flushing work and high-pressure cleaning, residents and those responsible are visibly applied. Some cellars also suffered water damage from the accident. The dispute with the insurance company is also about the size of the necessary construction pits for the work, which, according to insurance, were exaggerated.

An unpleasant process of discovery

The discovery of the problem happened in a rather macabre way when a resident visited her toilet in the morning at 4:30 a.m. Instead of normal toilet use, she not only found a backlog, but also a rat that she looked at. "The rat could not get out because its path was blocked through the destroyed tube, and then took the sewage pipe in the opposite direction," said the specialist in the sewage operation. This bizarre scene understandably frightened the woman and put the incident in an even more unusual light.

Wastewater operation agrees that the various regulations on occupational safety actually required such a depth of the construction pits to ensure the safety of the workers. The pit shouldn't have been too big to rule out a risk of collapse. The Dargun wastewater company hopes that the insurance company will provide an offer for agreement at the next trial date in order to clarify the situation as quickly as possible. It remains to be seen how this legal dispute develops and whether the city and its wastewater operation is entitled to the financial compensation that they are demanding.
