David Wagner leaves Greifswalder FC - a surprising step!

The Greifswald FC separated from its managing director Sport, David Wagner. This decision was announced to take into account the wishes of Wagner, who plans to return to his homeland. The early end of the collaboration follows an application for Wagner, which originally provided for a contract termination at the end of the season, but was implemented by the association before this period.

David Wagner has been in office since March 2022 and has significantly shaped the club during this time. Under his leadership, the Greifswald FC achieved the promotion to the Regionalliga Nordost and the first state cup victory after 28 years. Despite the team success, the personal motives for his separation remained central. The 50-year-old comes from Zwickau and wants to be closer to his family again.

personal motives and review of the career

The association's decision to release Wagner prematurely aims to ensure strategic plans for the current and the coming season. Heiko Jaap, CEO of the Greifswalder FC, expressed grateful for Wagner’s achievements: "He developed us enormously on a sporting level and made our team a top team in the regional league northeast."

Wagner himself also expressed a positive statement about his time at the Greifswald FC. In a press release, he said: "I am incredibly grateful for the time I was able to experience in Greifswald and at the GFC. The decision was therefore very difficult for me." He goes to a good agreement and plans to spend a lot of time with his family in Zwickau.

Current sporting location of the Greifswalder FC

On the sporting level, the Greifswald FC is rather changeable. After a bumpy start of the season with just three points from the first three games, the Greifswalds were able to stabilize a bit recently. A good game against Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin in the cup, which was just lost 0-1, created new confidence. Since then the team has won several games and is currently on a respectable sixth place in the table in the Regionalliga Nordost, but already ten points behind leaders Lokomotive Leipzig.

In the state cup, the team also shows strong performances. In the second round they defeated the national league team SC Ludwigslust/Grabow 7-0. In the next round that takes place on October 12, you will have to prove yourself in the away game against Oberliga club FC Anker Wismar. Here it will be a challenge to defend the title, especially since FC Hansa Rostock is a potential favorite.
