In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there is an exciting competition in the upcoming Bundestag election campaign: Philipp Amthor, the general secretary of the CDU state group, was elected to be top candidate with impressive 96.6 percent of the vote. This decision was made during a state representative meeting in Rostock, in which Amthor received 140 out of 146 votes. The 32-year-old has been a direct candidate for constituency 16 (Mecklenburg Lake District I-Western Pomerania-Greifswald II) for the third time and thus faces an increasingly challenging political landscape. The last federal election showed a high volatility, since the SPD 2021 won all direct mandates, which the CDU now wants to prevent with a stronger line -up, such as the Borkener Zeitung reported.

In the current political situation, Amthor calls for a fundamental change of policy in Germany, criticizes the traffic light government and speaks for a greater control of migration. In his opinion, it is necessary to stabilize the economy and to replace the citizens' allowance with a new basic security. He also demands a clear German leading culture and wants people to be rejected at the external borders. The CDU politician Simone Borchardt was elected second on the state list, followed by the former youth union boss Georg Günther, who prevailed against the SPD MP Dietrich Monstadt.

In order to regain the voters, the CDU relies on candidates who are deeply rooted in their regions and requires federal political support for the upcoming election campaign, says Amthor. Around ten weeks before the election on February 23, the CDU faces the challenge of asserting itself against the AfD, which is considered a favorite in current forecasts in several constituencies.
