Cologne's lips in need: How to protect yourself from winter dryness!
Köln, Deutschland - Cologne - Lip balm is an indispensable companion for many, especially in the cold season. But what if lip care becomes addicted? The Cologne dermatologist Uta Schlossberger gives exciting insights into the world of lip care in an interview and explains why our lips in the cold suffer.
When the temperatures sink, our lips have to struggle particularly. "At temperatures of 8 degrees and fewer, the sebaceous glands in the lip area set their work," explains Schlossberger. This leads to dry, brittle lips that tension uncomfortably. The change between cold, damp air outside and dry heating air inside is also a problem for the sebaceous glands. The episode? The lips dry out and urgently need care.
the right care for dry lips
What can you do to save your lips? "Applicing or greasing it is important, but with the right ingredients," says Schlossberger. Normal lipsticks are taboo because they often contain drying ingredients such as silicone oils and paraffins. Instead, the expert recommends products with natural ingredients such as Vaseline, shea butter or jojoba oil. Honey can also help, especially with inflamed or torn mouth angles.
But what about the dependence on lip balm? "Yes, a psychological dependency can occur," warns Schlossberger. It is not the case that the lips become drier by balm, but rather a habituation effect. "Once a day, usually, a maximum of twice. More frequent application can be counterproductive, especially for products with drying ingredients." So if you have to keep lubricating, you could get into a devilish spiral. The right lip care is not just a question of well -being, but also health!
