Climate change threatens water supply: Austria relies on water vision 2100
Franz-Josefs-Kai 47, 1010 Wien, Österreich - climate change does not stop at Austria either: the past winter was characterized by drought and lack of snow, especially in the east of the country. This alarming situation requires immediate measures to secure water supply for the future. Therefore, the Austrian association for the gas and water subject (ÖVGW) and the Austrian Water and Waste Management Association (ÖWAV) have launched the "Water Vision 2100". This vision aims to develop sustainable solutions for drinking water supply, water protection and flood management. Particular attention is paid to a stable infrastructure that meets the high demands on quality and environmental protection, such as ots.at reported.
Sustainable strategies and European guidelines
Austria's water supply is under pressure, and the "Water Vision 2100" is intended to ensure that the population will be supplied with sufficient high -quality drinking water by 2100. In addition to the protection of waters, the planned measures also include the renaturation of rivers, adaptation to climate change and the sensitization of the population for the value of the water. This commitment is in accordance with new European regulations that also come into force in Germany. The newly structured drinking water regulation will be implemented from June 24, 2023 and ensures that the high quality of the drinking water, which is considered one of the best controlled foods, remains guaranteed, as the Federal Environment Agency reports.
With the introduction of risk -based drinking water protection measures, water suppliers will have to proactively recognize and encounter risks in the future. The regulation determines strict chemical surveillance that will be expanded in the coming years, especially with regard to harmful substances such as PFAs. Another central point is the mandatory removal of old pale lines by 2026 to ensure the supply of safe drinking water. These are important steps that will contribute to improving water quality in both Austria and Germany.
