Young burglar in Spittal: Diesel and Krampus mask stolen!
On June 23, 2025, the Spittal an der Drau police station arrested a 21-year-old man from the Villach-Land district. He is suspected of having committed several burglaries between May 3rd and June 20th, 2025. Valuable items, including several thousand liters of diesel and copper cables, were stolen during these crimes. A Krampus mask with fur and a tail is also among the stolen objects. The total damage amounts to several thousand euros, as Klick Kärnten reports.
The investigation was initiated after an incident on the night of June 20, 2025. That evening, unknown perpetrators pumped diesel out of the unlocked tank of a mobile screening plant in a gravel pit in the Spittal an der Drau district. A total of around 2,000 liters of diesel are said to have been stolen. It is believed that diesel was previously stolen from two screening plants and two wheel loaders in May and early June.
Increasing crime figures in a nationwide comparison
Current crime statistics show a worrying increase in crimes in Germany. According to the police crime statistics (PKS), recorded crimes increased by 5.5% in 2023 to a total of 5,940,667 cases. The clearance rate was 58.4%, an improvement of 1.1 percentage points compared to the previous year. Factors that led to this increase include increased mobility following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, as well as economic and social stresses compounded by inflation, according to the analysis [BKA].
The development in theft crimes is particularly striking, with a total increase of 10.7%. Within this category, shoplifting saw a notable increase of 23.6% to 426,096 cases, the highest level since 2006. Residential burglary increased by 18.1%, but is still below 2019 levels.
Turning the tide or continuing crime?
In the following year 2024, there was a slight decrease in crime by 1.7% to 5,837,445 recorded crimes. The main reason for this was the partial legalization of cannabis, which led to a significant decrease in drug-related crime. Nevertheless, violent crime remains worryingly high, with an increase to 217,277 cases and is the highest value since 2007. The PKS 2024 also records an increase suspected children and young people, which indicates a growing challenge in this area.
The police will continue to intensively investigate the arrested 21-year-old in order to investigate possible further crimes on his part. At the same time, society is required to find solutions that can counteract the increasing number of crimes.
