European statistics competition: Register now and win prices!
In Germany, the third European statistics competition begins today, organized by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in cooperation with Eurostat and the statistics department of the Federal Employment Agency. Students in classes 8 to 13 have the opportunity to register for this competition by November 11, 2024. The aim is to strengthen the data competence of young people and to train them in dealing with statistics and in correct evaluation of information.
This competition focuses on the ability to check the facts, which is of central importance at a time that is characterized by a variety of information and often also by misinformation. The participating teams, which consist of two to three people, are supported by a teacher who takes over the registration and acts as contact person during the competition.
The competition process
The competition itself is divided into three rounds. In the first round, the pupils have to complete a multiple choice test that demands fundamental statistical knowledge to them, as well as their ability to research data and the knowledge of European statistics data. This first challenge serves to determine how well the participants are familiar with the basic concepts of statistics and to what extent they are able to identify relevant information.
In the second round, it is about evaluating a real microdata set from official statistics and processing it in a presentation. This phase not only requires mathematical knowledge, but also creative presentation skills, since the teams have to represent their results in an appealing form. The best teams in this national phase are invited to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden for the transfer of winners, where they are honored for their services in the field of statistics.
In the final comparison round at the European level, the qualified teams have to create a short video in which you can create your message creatively and impressively with the help of statistical data. On this last day of competition, teams from 21 EU countries will compete for attractive prices.
