Eudorf commemorates the fallen: reminder for peace and humility
in Eudorf, a moving commemoration of the fallen of the two world wars took place on the Memorial Day. The stormy wind could not cloud the venerable atmosphere when the trombone choir and the men's singing club under the direction of Helmut Wahl and Knut Petersen musically framed the ceremony. In front of the memorial in the cemetery, which bears the names of the fallen soldiers, those present gathered to pay respect for the victims.
Pastor Horst Nold and Mayor Edgar Merle kept urgent speeches who touched the audience deeply. Nold emphasized the importance of "humility" for a peaceful coexistence and warned of the dangers of totalitarian rulers who consider themselves infallible. "Caution is always required when people are celebrated because of their positions of power," he warned and recalled the dark chapters of Eudorf's history when the clergyman at the time held a festival service in Hitler in honor of only experiencing the devastating consequences of the war twelve years later.
Current crises and reminders
Mayor Merle addressed the current conflicts and their consequences. "Wars are increasing all over the world, so hundreds of millions of refugees are on the run," he stated, and criticized Putin's aggressive policy in Ukraine. He recalled the teachings from history: "Defend the beginning" was not just a saying, but an urgent reminder. Merle asked not to forget the millions of dead and asked the question of what everyone could do to promote peace. Based on the former Federal President Gauck, he said: "Our heart is far", but the possibilities are limited. Peace begins in his own home and in the upbringing of the children, he added.
