Inclusion in Marburg: The unique dormitory for all students
Marburg. in the heart of Marburg, in Sybelstraße 16, is the Konrad Biesalski House (KBH)-a unique home, that Students with and without physical restrictions offer a home. "We are a good stepping stone from the protected parental home for the residents into an independent life after studying," emphasizes Sven Wolf, the nursing manager who has been working in the KBH for 25 years. Self -determination is very important here, and the residents can individually determine what support they need.
The KBH offers a total of 74 dormitory places, of which a third of people with physical restrictions are inhabited. This integrative way of life is unique in Europe. "A prerequisite for an undisturbed university degree of physically severely disabled people in a wheelchair are suitable accommodations and secure transports," said the philosophy, which was formulated in 1969 and is still lived in the KBH today. The residents can register in plans for various services such as washing the laundry or shopping to promote their independence.
round-the-clock care
The KBH belongs to the Marburg Student Center and has a framework contract with the State Welfare Association Hessen. However, this also brings bureaucratic challenges with it, as the resident Eva Wurm had to find out when she moved to Marburg. Ten registered nurses are currently employed in the three-shift system to ensure 24/7 care. A service ensures that the residents get to their courses as well as to leisure activities and doctor's appointments.
In the KBH, not only the needs of the residents are dealt with, but also student assistants are used, including some residents without physical restrictions. This harmonious coexistence not only promotes independence, but also the social life of the students in the Kbh.
