Climate change: Frankfurt under record heat and snow gut!

The forecasts for 2024 show another alarming increase in temperatures in Germany and worldwide. According to a report by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Record classified. The world meteorology organization (WMO) in Geneva also points out that the incoming data confirms that 2024 will surpass the maximum values of 2023.

In Hesse, the German Weather Service declared the warmest year since 1881. An annual average of 12.23 degrees was registered at Frankfurt Airport, which is the fourth highest annual average since the start of the measurements. In the ranking of the highest annual average, the years 2018 (12.48 degrees), 2022 and 2023 (12.46 degrees each) prove the first places. It is also striking that February 2024 recorded a month of 8.2 degrees, which is a deviation of 6.4 degrees above the long -term average.

a worrying trend

2024 represented the 40th month in a row with elevated temperatures. The warmest registered years since 1936 have come almost exclusively from the period after 2000, with 2024, 2023 and 2022 being at the top. The future annual means could be above 13 degrees, while temperature values below 8 degrees, as in 1940, could no longer be considered realistic.

Another indicating aspect of climate change are the extremely reduced frost days in Frankfurt. In 2024 there were only five days with permanent frost, while in 1963 it was 54 frost days. A total of only 45 frost days were registered in Frankfurt in 2024, compared to 119 frost days in 1963. On summer days, defined as days with a maximum temperature of 25 degrees or more, 2024 was recorded in total for a total of 70 days - in the long -term average it is only 42. Heat days with a daily maximum temperature of 30 degrees or more were usually only 9 such days.

The small number of precipitation in the form of snow was particularly striking. In Frankfurt, only seven days were registered with snow or snow rain in 2024, while 16 days can be expected on the long -term average. With just three days with a perceptible blanket of snow, the number of days falls strongly, which should normally be 22. This data underline the worrying trend of climate change and the increasing rarity of snow in the region.

For more current weather data by January 4, 2025, the German Weather Service provided comprehensive data. These contain reviews for daily values, monthly values and annual values, but at the same time there are no annual values available for January 2025. The data also includes important explanations on the temperature measurements and precipitation in the region.
