University of Kassel: Stable students, but urge financial worries!

Shortly before the start of the winter semester at the University of Kassel, there is positive news about the number of students. After years of decline, the registration seems to have stabilized. Uni-President Ute Clement reported that the university expects a total number of around 22,000 students, which corresponded to the level of the previous year. This is a gratifying signal for the university, which has been faced with decreasing signings in the past.

The number of freshmen in Bachelor and master programs with 4,440 registered new students was reported last week, which means a slight increase in the previous year. It can be expected that further registrations will be added until the start of the courses that start on Monday. However, the university is also worried about the increasing number of entitrikulations, as more and more students leave the university without a degree. According to Clement, this development may be due to the currently high demand for workers. The job market could be a tempting alternative, especially for students who have difficulty studying.

financial uncertainties shape the Situation

Despite the stable signing numbers, the University of Kassel faces considerable financial challenges. Ute Clement expressed concern about the uncertain financial prospects of the university. The strong cost increases, in particular through tariff increases, put the university under pressure. Another factor is the unclear state budget for 2025, which affects the budget of universities. So far it is uncertain which means the university can expect next year.

The challenges are not only limited to Kassel; All Hessian universities are aware of the critical situation. At the same time, negotiations on the Hessian university pact are in full swing for 2026 to 2030. The state government in Wiesbaden is also forced to take austerity measures by collapsing tax revenue.

Another concern of the university concerns the planned new building for the natural sciences. The construction of construction was originally planned for 2026, but this appointment shifted to 2028. This was confirmed by the state company Bau and Immobilien in Hessen (LBIH). The construction is estimated at around 120 million euros, but measures to reduce costs are currently being examined in order to counteract the increased construction and operating costs.

These developments are crucial for the University of Kassel and its efforts to create a stable learning environment even in times of economic uncertainties. With the upcoming semester, one hopes that the number of students will not only remain stable, but also send a sign of the attractiveness of the university in the region.
