Kassel in turmoil: Climate activists block A49 and provide mega traffic jams!
Traffic on the important motorway 49 near Kassel was able to resume on Monday evening after climate activists from the “Last generation” group blocked the road. About 40 people had become active for this protest event shortly after 4 p.m. and had completely blocked both the main lane and the Waldau exit. The activists demanded the closure of the Kassel Airport in Calden and, however, their action was classified by the police as a "unmistaked assembly".
The blockade quickly led to considerable traffic disruptions and a backlog of up to five kilometers. The police had tried several times to request the demonstrators to clear the road, but at first it was unsuccessful. Therefore, the police were forced to intervene around 5 p.m. and get the activists off the road, which could finally be released again. The clean -up work took a while, and it took a while for traffic to normalize, although the access to the Waldau junction continued to be closed.
The investigation begins
After the successful evacuation, the 40 demonstrators were taken into custody and brought to the police headquarters in Northern Hesse. There the officials carried out identity examinations and dismissed space. All activists were later released. However, the police have announced that it will initiate investigations into road traffic and coercion for the dangerous intervention. The determination of individual participation in the crime will be part of the further investigations, which shows that the authorities meticulously pursue this type of protest.
The campaign not only concerned the police and the judiciary, but also numerous drivers who were affected by the traffic jams. Commentators and observers fear that such activities could lead to an increase in tensions and to tighten the clashes between demonstrators and the security forces. It remains to be seen which legal consequences the activists have to expect as a result of this protest, since administrative offenses are also initiated due to violations of the Hessian Freedom of Meeting Act.
In a current analysis of the situation, it is clear that the "last generation" meets its actions for an ever broader public perception, even if the methods are controversial. The activists bring such blockages on motorways or traffic nodes in direct conflict with society, since they not only hold on to their concerns, but also consider the everyday life of people considerably.
