Horror farm in Vogelsberg: Calves drink urine from puddles!
A worrying report on animal husbandry in a milk business in the Vogelsberg district near Gießen causes excitement and outrage. In a recent study, serious grievances were found: cows and calves had to live under extremely bad conditions, some animals were up to 50 cm high in their own feces and drank urine from puddles because there were no clean water. This is alarming, especially when you consider that such grievances continue to stop four years after the first findings by the responsible authorities.
The checks of milk operation began after a first decision that pointed out defects in 2020. A press release from the Gießen Administrative Court confirmed that the terrifying conditions came to light again during a check at the end of 2023. The fact that the animals had no access to a dry lying surface is a clear sign of the disregard of the Animal Welfare Act.
The reaction of the authorities
The high death rates of the animals between 2020 and 2024 volumes talk about the catastrophic conditions in the farm. Since the farmer has not shown any improvement in the keeping conditions for a long time, he now threatens a ban on animal husbandry. Despite his resistance, he apparently wants to keep cattle and thus produce milk - an attitude that is questionable in view of this evidence.
The judges at the Gießen Administrative Court rejected an urban application from the farmer, which means that the possibility of a ban on keeping is in the air. However, this ban is not yet final, and the farmer continues to have the option of legal action against it. The majority of the population are often not aware of the conditions under which the animals live, whose dairy products they consume.
A shocking detail is the fact that in 2022 only 18 percent of the livestock companies subject to control were actually checked in Germany. In over a quarter of these companies, violations of animal welfare law were also found. Extrapolated to the total number of agricultural businesses in Germany, you get almost 75,000 in which potentially serious abuses exist.
The contradictions in the system are striking: While the farmer fought against the impending measures, the animals must continue to suffer from unsustainable conditions. This raises questions about the entire surveillance system and leads to the consideration of how many animals live in similar conditions under comparable conditions.
An approach to improvement seems to be in the distance, since a register for animal husbandry and care bans decided in 2022 has not yet been implemented. Instead, you continue to fight with the overload and the obvious deficits in the control system, which enable animal owners to work without serious consequences over long periods of time.
The shocking circumstances under which the animals had to live in this special case are not an isolated case, but reflect a systematic problem. Future food buyers may be well advised to deal more intensively with the sources of their animal products and to become more aware of the problem of animal welfare.
Reality on many modern companies is often anything but peaceful. If you want to seriously get involved in animal welfare, you could consider switching to a purely vegetable diet. This is the only way to ensure that no animals live in such unreasonable conditions just to land on the plate of a consumer.
