Sophie from the Tann receives German television award for brave reporting

In a moving moment of the television world, journalist Sophie from Tann was awarded the 25th German TV Award in Cologne. She received the funding prize for her outstanding reporting on the Israel Gaza War. This event took place on September 25, 2024 and represents an important milestone in her career, which has been working as an ARD journalist in Tel Aviv since 2021.

The roots of Sophie von der Tann are in the picturesque Rhön region, in the Fulda district, where she grew up and completed her Abitur at the Rabanus Maurus School. Her studies in Oxford, London and New York included theology, history and orientalism. Fascinated by the world of journalism, she then completed a traineeship at the Bavarian Radio and came into the media landscape.

Congratulations and recognition for courageous reporting

The award winner was overjoyed and surprised when the message was brought to her. Jessy Wellmer, the moderator of the "Daily Topics", brought her the good news via video connection. "With the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, Sophie's job has become even more complicated, but also more dangerous," said Wellmer, pointing out the challenges that the journalist faces in such a conflict-loaded region.

"I am overwhelmed. I hadn't expected that at all," admitted from the Tann and thanked her colleagues and the people behind the camera, who enabled her to work. "My thanks go to all the local forces in Israel, in the West Bank and especially in Gaza, who risk their lives every day to do journalistic work," she continued.

The German TV Award, one of the most renowned awards in the German television landscape, was awarded in various categories. On the eve of the main award, winners were already recognized in eleven categories, including the actor Mario Adorf for his life's work. He joked that he had never canceled a award ceremony for health problems in his 94 years.

Another highlight of the event was the honor of the ARD production “Die Doubters”, which shone in several categories. Aaron Altaras received the prize as the best actor, while Sunnyi Melles was recognized as the best actress. The series was also chosen as the best drama series.

The most emotional moment of the evening came from another contribution: "I am! Margot Friedländer" about the Holocaust survivor, which conveyed urgent messages about the importance of democracy. Her moving speech meant that the audience gave standing ovation and many people present were moved to tears.

The awarding of the German TV Award not only brings recognition for individuals, but also recognizes the work in the entire media sector, including the challenges that journalists face in crisis areas. In this sense, Sophie is seen by the Tann as a symbol of committed journalism that looks outside the box and stands for the truth, even in the most difficult times.

The founders of the price, including ARD, Deutsche Telekom, RTL, ZDF and Sat.1, supported the award ceremony together with streaming providers such as Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video. This year, a total of 23 awards went to various media houses and formats, which underlines the diversity and quality of German television culture.
