The costs for the use of the power grid in Germany will decrease by around 3 % for household customers in 2025. At first glance, this reduction appears low, but in a concrete calculation it can mean saving around 17 euros for a household with an annual consumption of 4000 kWh. This results in a significant proportion of the total current calculation, which is likely to be around 550 euros per year.
However, the discounts show significant regional differences that result from the structure of the different distribution networks. This refers to more than 800 networks in Germany, which means that the reductions do not apply evenly to everyone. The comparison portal Verivox has created a comprehensive analysis that illuminates the different effects in the individual federal states.
Regional different price developments
The situation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is particularly striking, where the network use fee is falling by 24 %-that is about 154 euros less for the model budget. Schleswig-Holstein (-20 %) and Brandenburg (-19 %) also have significant reductions. Nevertheless, there are also federal states where the fees increase, such as Hamburg (+8 %), Baden-Württemberg (+5 %) and Berlin (+5 %).
This significant difference in the price trends could mean that households in rural regions that have had a high addition of renewable energy systems in recent years benefit from the new regulation. The new compensation mechanism, which was introduced by the Federal Network Agency, aims to distribute costs for all consumers and at the same time take into account the expansion of the power grids.
Relief by the compensation mechanism
By expanding wind and solar energy generation systems, there are high costs, which are often only borne by a small number of consumers. In order to defuse the situation, the Federal Network Agency wants to ensure that these costs will be distributed fairly in the future. Even if some providers will pass on different parts of the savings to their customers, it remains to be seen how exactly the new structure will affect electricity prices.
By the end of October, further levies will also be announced that can influence the final price. An additional levy is expected to compensate for the lost revenue of the network operators, which means that all electricity consumers are actually involved in the savings.
The costs for the maintenance and expansion of electricity networks are still financed via the network use fee, which is partially paid to the network operators. This price fluctuates significantly regionally, which can ensure different final prices among consumers.
In summary it can be said that future changes in the structure of network use charges in Germany will affect, especially in rural areas. It remains to be seen whether and how strongly these adjustments are reflected in the electricity tariffs of the individual providers.
