Petition against cat shot: 40,000 signatures for animal welfare!
Schleswig-Holstein, Deutschland - It is bubbling in Schleswig-Holstein! An explosive petition has recently conquered the hearts of 40,000 cat lovers and demands an immediate ban on shooting wild cats. Initiator Sylvia Schumann from Hamburg has triggered a wave of outrage on Change.org after the current state hunting law allows hunters to kill cats that are more than 200 meters from a house. In the period from April 2023 to March 2024, this happened alarming 2,580 times!
The emotional debate recorded social networks. Schumann describes cats as "wonderful animals" with a "wonderful character" and cannot believe that people shoot them. But not all voices are against killing: the State Hunting Association of Schleswig-Holstein argues that this is necessary to protect endangered bird species. Bird expert Martin Rümmler from NABU Germany warns that overgrown cats kill millions of birds every year. While the hunters insist on the protection of biodiversity, Schumann calls for a humane solution: castration of stray cats.
A call to change
Sylvia Schumann is convinced that the solution is not in killing. Instead, stray cats are to be caught and neutered to regulate the population naturally. Various organizations are currently working on castration actions, but the number of wild cats in Schleswig-Holstein remains worryingly high. However, the Ministry of Agriculture has made it clear that no change in the law is planned. Schumann hopes that her petition will move the state government to rethink and follow Schleswig-Holstein to the examples of other federal states in which bans already exist.
