Norderelbbrücke remains insufficient - new building only planned in 2029/30!
The Norderelbbrücke, an important building of the A1 near Hamburg, is in a critical condition. After an official investigation, the bridge received the insufficient grade 3.5 from the Federal Street system. This indicates that the safety of the building is considerably endangered. The age of the bridge, which was built in 1963, contributes to this problem. Despite the serious location, it looks like the bridge would have to withstand traffic for at least six years before the new building is in sight.
The Federal Project Society Deges announced that the work for the replacement building is expected to begin in 2026, although the first preparations may be able to start at the end of 2025. However, according to the current plan, the latest lane shots on the new bridge should not take place until 2029 or 2030. Until the legal foundations for this are created, time could still pass: the planning approval decision will be sought in mid -2026. However, there are already concerns because more than 20 objections, including those from environmental associations, have been received by the competent authority that could cause a delay.
state grade "insufficient"
The Norderelbbrücke is put into a bad light by various small defects that have accumulated and thus lead to the poor state grade. According to Autobahn GmbH Nord, stability and traffic safety are not fully impaired, but temporary measures had to be taken to ensure that traffic on the bridge can continue to be handled safely.
Not only locally the condition of the Norderelbbrücke ensures conversation, there are also concerns at the national level. An analysis of the federal approval community repair of concrete structures found that a total of 43 bridges in Germany, which are longer than 50 meters, were also rated as insufficient. This shows that the problem not only affects the problem of bridges of bridges, but also represents a widespread phenomenon in Germany.
cracks in welds and traffic load
The examination of the Norderelbbrücke revealed fine cracks between weld seams and steel components. Although this cracks do not pull through the entire component and the steel thickness is not questionable, temporary restrictions on heavy goods traffic were issued for the safety of the bridge. This strong load is also underlined by traffic on the bridge, where about 136,000 vehicles are counted every day. The proportion of truck traffic is around 21 percent and is expected to increase in the coming years, up to 27 percent in 2030.
The Norderelbbrücke is a central traffic axis that contributes significantly to the development of the Hamburg area. Due to its high volume of traffic, it is one of the most busy motorway routes in Germany. It is therefore essential that not only the bridge will be brought up to a safe stand in the near future, but that the necessary steps for a permanent solution will also be initiated in the long term.
