New gate to Herbertstraße: Does it remain unaffected or will it be defaced?
Hamburg - A new chapter in the history of the famous Herbertstraße! With a fresh, bright red entrance gate, the eastern access to the legendary brothel alley on St. Pauli shines. But the question remains: how long will this piece of jewelry remain unaffected before graffiti and stickers put their stamp on it?
The Herbertstraße, an integral part of Hamburg's nightlife for over 100 years, is known for their prostitutes who offer their services behind windows. The new gate was inaugurated on time for the weekend after the old, heavily worn out specimen was dismantled. The condition of the two goals had deteriorated dramatically through years of use and environmental influences, which made the exchange inevitable.
a piece of history for the museum
The old gate that was dismantled on Monday is not simply disposed of. Instead, it is exhibited in the Museum of Hamburg History as an important testimony in city history. The privacy systems, which were built by the National Socialists in 1933, are listed and are reminiscent of a dark time in which sex workers were persecuted as "female anti -social elements". A memorial stone that has been in front of Herbertstrasse since August warns of the suffering of these women.
Although the new goal now regulates access to the Herbertstraße for men aged 18 and over, the privacy score on the west side is preserved as a monument and is to be restored at a later date. Herbertstraße remains a place full of history and stories, and the new goal is only the latest part of this fascinating story.
