Hamburg: naturalization boom thanks to the new law and digital application!

Since the end of June, new rules have been in place for naturalization in Germany. No surprise that the figures in Hamburg climax. The new naturalization right became effective on June 27 and results in a strong increase in applications. In Hamburg alone, the number of entries with almost 6000 applications has doubled in the first 100 days since came into force. This development marks an important turning point for many migrants, especially for Syrian citizens who have been living in Germany since 2015.

compared to previous years, the increase is remarkable. While around 6268 applications in Hamburg were submitted throughout 2020, their number rose to 13,658 by mid -September 2023. Also in the actual naturalizations, growth from 4502 in 2020 to 6281 in the current year until mid -September. Regardless of the challenges in processing these inquiries, the Office for Migration in Hamburg has taken additional measures to cope with the workload.

innovations in the naturalization process

With a number of modernizations, the Office for Migration wants to optimize the processes. By digitization, applicants can now apply for their naturalization online, which significantly simplifies the entire process. The new digital quick check checks in advance whether applicants meet all the requirements that increases the effectiveness of the procedure. The aim is to reduce personal contact to a minimum, so that often only the handover of the naturalization certificate requires a walk to the office.

Thanks to these new procedures, Hamburg has a head start as one of the first federal states that takes the digital path. Developments also underlines a report by www.welt.de .

The amendment of citizenship law allows foreigners to apply for German citizenship after five years and short integration even after three years. What is new is that previous nationalities can be kept. In particular, simplified evidence of language skills apply, so that they only have to communicate orally in everyday life without the usual naturalization test.

stricter guidelines and values

At the same time, the guidelines for the commitment to the free democratic basic order have been tightened. A potential citizen must clearly commit himself to human dignity and equality. Anti -Semitic, racist or other inhuman actions are not compatible with the principles of the German constitution, as the Federal Ministry of the Interior underlines.

Overall, these measures mean not only a relief of access to citizenship, but also a clear attitude of Germany with regard to an integrative and value -oriented social policy. Hamburg seems to be on the right track with its initiatives in order to efficiently master this challenge.
