Spring guards in Lower Austria: 1,150 new Nextbike wheels start!

Niederösterreich, Österreich - On March 26, 2025, the start of the spring marks the start of the new bike season in Lower Austria. With the blossoming of nature and the longer days, the motivation to get back on the bike comes. This year Lower Austria's cyclists have an improved offer: Over 1,150 Nextbike lines are provided in order to meet the needs of the users. This initiative is highlighted in an official report by OTS

The number of borrowing rose by an impressive 71 % to almost 350,000 last year. This shows a growing interest in this environmentally friendly means of transport. Around 73 municipalities and 198 special loan stations are part of the network, which is mainly set up at train stations and public facilities. A bike can be rented via an app or by phone. The rental tariff is 1 euro per hour or 10 euros per day.

goals and initiatives to promote sustainable mobility

The challenge "Lower Austria cycles", which runs until the end of September, motivates citizens to collect cycling kilometers and win prices. Going on foot is also promoted, and various initiatives were launched, such as "Toni, the Verkehrfuchs" and "on foot to school". These programs should promote traffic safety in particular for children and raise awareness of sustainable mobility. The aim of all measures is to create a healthy and safe environment in everyday life.

The NextBike bike coverage offer has been active in Lower Austria for nine years. During this time, the fleet has continuously increased and improved. Almost half of the rental bikes are replaced regularly, and this year 400 new bikes will be procured. These new rental bikes have a modern locking system with GPS location and Bluetooth, automatic LED lights, breakdown protection tires as well as a height-adjustable saddle and a stable front basket, which significantly increases driving comfort.

Lower Austria in the context of sustainable mobility

Compared to other regions, the development in Lower Austria is particularly remarkable. While Hamburg takes 14th place in the current “Federal Lander Index Mobility” and is considered one of the final lights in sustainable mobility, Lower Austria has positive progress. Hamburg has to struggle with high noise and air pollution values, which has a negative impact on the quality of life of the residents. The traffic policy there has been criticized as inadequate for years, while in Lower Austria the expansion of the cycling infrastructure is promoted in Lower Austria.

Overall, the initiatives in Lower Austria look promising and help to increase awareness of sustainable mobility. The increased use of rental bikes and the associated programs are a step in the right direction for the promotion of environmentally friendly transport and the improvement of the quality of life in the communities.
