Old Elbe tunnel in Hamburg for renovation to Nicholas closed!

Alter Elbtunnel, 20359 Hamburg, Deutschland - Hamburg's old Elbe tunnel, a historical landmark and popular attraction for tourists, has been closed for three weeks since Monday due to urgent renovation work. Around one million pedestrians and 300,000 cyclists use this tunnel every year, which has been closed to cars for years. The western tube has been out of operation for a long time due to extensive renovation measures. The current work includes the renewal of the road surface, whereby harmful vapors from the sealing materials used can arise. Therefore, the tunnel remains completely blocked until December 6th, at 8 p.m.

ferry connections as a solution

To make it easier to cross the Elbe during the blocking, the Hamburg Traffic Agency has organized a ferry replacement traffic at HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst AG. On the two affected weekends, November 23 and 24, November 30th and December 1st, line 75 will commute between the Landungsbrücken and Steinwerder every hour, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On weekdays there are already similar ferry connections to help the commuters to cope with the changeover.

The old Elbe tunnel was opened in 1911 and was a technical masterpiece at the time. The extensive renovation work that has been going on for years should be completed by 2025 when the west tube is reopened. The progress in the renovation is crucial to ensure the security and preservation of this important building.
