Glass fiber expansion in the Main-Tauber district: Why progress stops!

In the Main-Tauber district, the expansion of the fast internet has stalled. Broadband supply Germany (BBV) announced the expansion of the fiber optic network in November 2023. According to Main-echo.de , a multifunctional housing is to be set up in Nassig this year. At the moment, however, there is no specific information on the start of the earthworks for the fiber optic cables in the municipality of wet.

To receive and forward the Internet signal, a point-of-presence (POP) was installed on the Landesstraße 2310 in Eichel. Project manager Michael Semprich described this installation as an important milestone for the project. However, there is ambiguity over the beginning of the fiber optic expansion in Wertheim, especially in the Eichel district. BBV plans to inform about the planning status at the beginning of December 2023, but a delay is already obvious.

Problems with fiber optic expansion

For the work in Wertheim, the company Keßler Kabelpflug from Waldbrunn was commissioned after Terrado Networks GmbH was deducted due to buildings in Wittighausen. The fiber optic expansion in the Main-Tauber district has not progressed up to the present time in 2024. While symbolic groundbreaking stabs took place in Creglingen in November 2023, the actual start of construction is delayed by almost a year. Creglingen remains the only municipality in which the expansion precedes, with the aim of completing the work by the end of 2025.

In Wittighausen, Terrado has hired the work without finally completing the expansion. This has led to massive damage to roads and sidewalks. To fix the damage, BBV sent another company, but it is unclear when the expansion in Wittighausen will continue.

The fiber optic expansion in Germany is essential for the nationwide fiber cover, as described on Glasfaserinet.info In 2021, Germany only took 34th place in the FTTH ranking with a penetration rate of 6.3 %. It is forecast that the number of fiber optic customers will increase from two to 25 million by 2026, which corresponds to growth of 1757 %. However, the expansion is delayed due to high costs and low demand.
