Georg Knufmann: Held of social psychiatry in Ebersberg is retired
Georg Knufmann, the tireless fighter for the rights of people with mental illnesses, was honored with the Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany! Bavaria's Minister of Health and Nursing Judith Gerlach presented the high award on Monday in Würzburg and praised Knufmann's extraordinary achievements that go far beyond the normal. "Without idealism and commitment, there would be no active civil society. Our country needs people like those honored today who tackle and work for others," emphasized the minister during the celebration. This 66-year-old Dachauer has been at the head of the social psychiatric service in Ebersberg for over 35 years and helped countless people to find a place in society again.
Knufmann's legacy in social psychiatry
In his long career, Knufmann did true pioneering work. Already in 1988 he campaigned for mentally polluted people by initiating an external consultation in the Evangelical parish of Ebersberg. What started as a lone fighter has still developed into an extensive range of services that comprises almost 50 employees. The social psychiatric service is not only a consulting service, but has also established a psychiatric crisis service and outpatiently supervised forms of living. The garden courtyard, a day care center for those who need support, and a sign of its dedication to social psychiatric care in rural areas is particularly remarkable.
Now that Knufmann retires, he leaves an impressive legacy. His commitment has changed life and shaped the landscape of social psychiatry. "A small room, there was nothing more," Knufmann looks back at modest beginnings that have grown with tireless use of today's diversity and strength. The people from the Ebersberg district will always feel the impact he left. One can proudly say that Georg Knufmann is a real legend in social psychiatry, the light of which will continue to illuminate, even if he now takes up his well -deserved retirement.
