Festival 2025: Opening with love, music and Jelinek premiere!
The Viennese festival weeks started on Friday evening with a festive start at the Rathausplatz. Director Milo Rau from Switzerland welcomed the guests present and presented the motto of the festival weeks in 2025: "Republic of Love". This leitmotif is intended to reflect on the emotional and political discussions of current current events. The festival weeks last until June 22, 2025 and offer an extensive program with around 50 projects.
Special highlights of the festival weeks are the first Viennese performance of Elfriede Jelinek's play "Burgtheater" in the Burgtheater and an immersive project by the Signa Theater Group in the Funkhaus, the central event location of the festival. Jelinek's work focuses on the transition of National Socialism into the post-war period and criticizes the victim and resistance lie of the time. The piece is considered one of the great myths of theater history and shows prophetic connections to the current political situation in Europe. In countries such as Hungary and Italy, neo -fascist parties are in power, while in Germany and France right parties strive for government power. In Austria, too, an election victory of right -wing populist FPÖ is expected in Austria, led by Herbert Kickl, who is considered a promising candidate for chancellor. Experts predict a possible return to a national culture, as described in Jelinek's work, should actually come to power.
diverse opening program
The opening festival under the motto "V is for Love" attracted numerous visitors who were able to dive into the musical offer with free entry. This ranged from punk to classic and ensured a lively atmosphere. Among the announced artists were well -known domestic pop greats such as Soap & Skin and Nino from Vienna as well as the Jauntal Trachtenkapelle. In addition, international artists also performed, including the German Song Contest winner from 1982, Nicole, and the American superstar Laurie Anderson. The opening ceremony was transferred live to ORF 2 and 3sat from 9:20 p.m. to reach a wider audience.
background to theater science
In parallel to the festival weeks, the Institute for Theater Studies at the University of Vienna deals with the history of the theater in the context of National Socialism. Founded in 1943, the institute under the direction of Birgit Peter has developed various exhibitions and publications on the founding history and their links with post -Nazi developments. A current project that started in October 2023 examines the National Socialist interweaving of the subject and deals with repressed articles on theater history. As part of this project, a panel discussion on the subject of “Nazi history history of theater science” will also take place on December 11, 2023. The event is carried out hybrid and should stimulate the discussion of current topics. The combination of the Viennese festival weeks and the Ongoing discourses on theater science shows how profound the city's cultural scene is embedded in social and political issues. At a time when the return to national stories and an increased political division in Europe can be felt, the festival offers a platform to creatively reflect and discuss these challenges.
