Loneliness in old age: How everyday supervisors can save lives!
Essen, Deutschland - Essen (ots) - More and more older people fall into the trap of loneliness! An alarming report shows that 29 percent of women and 17.5 percent of men over 80 years of suffering suffer from a significant feeling of loneliness. Andreas Stammer, partner of the Promedica Group in the Bergisches Land, warns: "Loneliness in old age has many faces, and the creeping isolation is often a process of years!" Many old people fight with the challenge of finding a balance between the desire for independence and the lonely reality, especially when friends and family live in the distance.
The social contacts of the elderly are often limited to sporadic visits by relatives and contact with general practitioners or nursing services. Birthday celebrations and Christmas parties are often the only highlights a year, then loneliness returns. Stammer's words get to the point: "For many, everyday life becomes a difficult stress." But there are bright spots: everyday supervisors can enormously enrich the life of those affected! Although many supervisors from the EU have linguistic barriers, they create closeness and care. "In communication, not only words count; sensitivity and small gestures are crucial," emphasizes Stammer. Lunch together can be a great treat for many seniors.
