The oldest alp in the Allgäu: cheese production with history in Balderschwang

In Oberallgäu, more precisely in Balderschwang, is the oldest managed alpine pasture in Germany. This historic site, built in the 16th century, is not only a place with impressive history, but also an active center of cheese production. The Unterbalderschwang Alpe, which is open for management from May to October, is located in beautiful surroundings and is easily accessible - just a ten-minute walk from the center of Balderschwang.

The roots of the Alpe go back to 1569, when a holy mass was celebrated here. The alp originally belonged to a monastery before it became the property of a family around 1800, which has continued the tradition of alpine farming ever since. The Alpe is currently home to around 30 cattle and 40 cows, which are used for daily cheese production.

The cheese from Alpe Unterbalderschwang is known for its excellent quality. Every day around 70 kilograms of Sennalp cheese, soft cheese and butter are made from the cows' fresh milk. Despite the possibility of visiting the dairy upon prior request, it is unfortunately not possible to dine directly on site. However, there is a farm shop where the products can be purchased.

There are a total of almost 700 Alps in the Allgäu. About 40 of these are in the Alps, which play an important role in the regional economy and culture. Around 3,000 cows and 28,000 (young) cattle live in this picturesque region, which is known for its extensive bright pastures. More than half of these areas are protected, which highlights the importance of sustainable management.

Hikers and nature lovers value the Sennalps not only for their culinary offerings, but also for the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking nature of the Allgäu. During a visit, guests can experience the idyllic landscape and the calming atmosphere of the mountains.
