Chaos in early elections? Schongau communities on alert!
The federal election could take place as early as January 2025! A dramatic move that is putting the communities in the Weilheim-Schongau district under enormous pressure. Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to ask the Bundestag for a vote of confidence, which could result in the dissolution of the Bundestag and an early election. But the preparations? They're on the brink!
Typically, communities like Peiting begin preparations months in advance. But now? Managing director Stefan Kort is skeptical: “Two months is simply too short!” Andreas Bayerlein from the registration, election and trade office in Weilheim is also critical of the matter. “We are the last link in the food chain,” he says, warning of the challenges posed by such a short-term election. The preparations are complex: electoral districts have to be divided, poll workers have to be appointed and trained. And all of this under time pressure!
Preparation is currently hardly possible
The communities are faced with a huge mountain of tasks. Divide electoral districts, recruit election workers, order postal voting documents – the list is long! “We can only really get started when a concrete date has been set,” explains Joachim Bodendieck, head of the public order office in Penzberg. But what happens if the date falls during the Christmas season? Many helpers may be away, further complicating the situation.
Printing companies are another problem child. Bettina Schade from Schongau emphasizes that the ballot papers come from the Federal Returning Officer, but the printing companies have to print and distribute everything on time. “This could be a big risk!” she warns. And don't forget: The parties have to nominate their candidates, which requires a democratic process. Time is of the essence and the communities agree: an earlier election should not fail because of them, but more preparation time would be desirable. Chaos threatens if the printing companies don't keep up - and no one wants to risk that!
